US Government: Federal Biosurveillance Ecosystem

Leveraging social media in the visualization of multi-dimensional biosurveillance data for disease tracking.

In today’s interconnected world, it is imperative to have an effective interoperable biosurveillance system for early warning, detection and rapid characterization of disease and other health hazards. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) saw that non-traditional data sources combined with traditional sources were identifying disease occurrences faster than government agencies could report them.

They envisioned a tool that would allow analysts to access and use various data streams for building reports including: social media, clinical, and environmental. Together with Digital lnfuzion, Essential visualized a biosurveillance ecosystem for DTRA as a workbench of interactive tools for real-time disease prediction and forecasting. Through intuitive iconography and metaphors that span cultures, Essential designed a responsive ecosystem interface that is readily collaborative, navigable, and intuitive.
